Monterey, CA Elder Abuse Alert Related To Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakesby Richard Kuehn on 03/05/17
There are a wealth of scams targeting senior citizens, and the Monterey Herald reported that the latest to hit the Monterey Peninsula is scammers calling seniors and telling them that they had won millions in The Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes. Peter Hoss, a retired attorney and advisor to Legal Services for Seniors, wrote that this “lucky winner” would soon receive a knock on the door to have a sheriff escort her to Bank of America to deposit the check in the winners account. All she had to do was pay a $2,500 fee to transfer the account. When one woman said she was a senior and didn’t have $2,500, they said they could lower the fee to $960. She said she didn’t have that either. These stories almost make you want to not answer your own phone.
