Carmel, CA More Companies Offloading Retiree Pension Plans To Insurance Companies

by Richard Kuehn on 03/13/17

If you don't recognize the name of the payor on your retirement check, don’t worry.  More and more companies are offloading their pension plans to insurance companies who administer them and issue checks to retirees.  As fewer and fewer companies offer old-fashioned pension plans, the headache of administering them and try and time the volatility of stocks and interest rates has become a headache that many companies don’t want to deal with.  As interest rates go up, this reduces the amount of any unfunded shortfall on pension plans, so expect more companies to offload their pension plans in the future as the Federal Reserve Bank is expected to raise interest rates a whopping three times this year.

Pacific Bingo & Event Center Just Opened At Monterey County Fair & Event Center

by Richard Kuehn on 03/12/17

If you are looking for something fun to do and perhaps meet some new friends, how about a game of bingo?  Pacific Bingo & Event Center just opened at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center.  They have it set up so that you go in and buy a ticket, you are handed a tablet, the caller announces the type of game to be played such as crazy six pack or crazy letter T.  Then the numbers begin being called.  The non-profit that operates Pacific Bingo as well as Broadway Bingo in Salinas gives all proceeds back to other non-profits such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, Food Bank for Monterey County, Active Seniors, etc.  What a great way to have fun and give back to the community.  For more information, go to www.pacificbingo.net or call 831-241-6041.

Carmel, CA TrumpCare Stalling In Congress

by Richard Kuehn on 03/11/17

Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare are proving easier said than done.  Governors from states that expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act are vigorously fighting its appeal.  Republican Governors from the sixteen states that expanded Medicaid are lobbying heavily against the House GOP plan which would freeze funding starting in 2020 for states that expanded Medicaid and follow that with steep cuts in funding.  Democrats are also vehemently against the repeal.  Senator Jeff Merkley (Democrat, Oregon) called the replacement bill a “dangerously bad plan” and said it would slash Medicaid and dramatically raise costs for older Americans.  “It gives big tax breaks to high-income Americans while raising taxes for low-income America,” he said.  The bill proposed to replace Obamacare would deliver about $157 billion in tax benefits over the coming decade to those with incomes of $1 million or more, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation, a nonpartisan panel that provides research on tax issues.  There is also a deep division amongst Republicans.  Representative Dave Brat (Republican, VA), a member of the Budget Committee, said he plans to vote no “if it’s the bill we’re talking about right now.”  He predicted that “it will be a death spiral on Trump’s watch,” he told The Wall Street Journal

Carmel, CA Dr. Scott Gottleib Trump’s Pick For FDA Commissioner

by Richard Kuehn on 03/11/17

President Donald Trump is set to nominate Dr. Scott Gottleib to run the Food and Drug Administration.  He’s a conservative medical doctor who has previous government experience and previously served as deputy FDA commissioner under George W. Bush.  You may recognize the name if you read The Wall Street Journal as he is a frequent contributor to the opinion pages.  He has promoted provocative views and has promulgated less regulation, a favorite theme of Trump’s.  A cancer survivor with a medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, he is expected to be quickly confirmed by the Senate.  One item which is expected to be a topic of hot debate is he has proposed putting a committee in charge of drug approval decisions which could potentially give a politically appointed commissioner more direct authority over new-product decisions than is now the case.  Harvard Medical School Professor Jerry Avorn told The Journal that he was “particularly concerned” about this concept.

Carmel, CA Artificial Intelligence Test To Help Cancer Patients Turns Out To Be A Dud

by Richard Kuehn on 03/09/17

A special review done by the University of Texas System Audit Office says that a project launched in 2012 by the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has gone through $62 million with little to show for it.  The university had exciting plans to use Artificial Intelligence to treat cancer.  However, this is easier said than done and this hasn’t quite turned out as planned.  The new system, based on the Watson-based intelligent system IBM built for MD Anderson called Oncology Expert Advisor, or OEA, was supposed to read and learn from MD Anderson’s electronic medical records, academic literature, research data and treatment options to improve cancer care at the well-known cancer center.  MD Anderson’s president, Ronald De Pinho, resigned yesterday.  “It became clear to me that this great and noble institution needs a new president who will inspire greater unity and sharp operational focus,” he said.  It’s unclear whether other researchers will try and give AI a shot.

Salinas Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group In Spanish To Be Held March 13

by Richard Kuehn on 03/08/17

The Alzheimer's Association is having a caregivers support group in Spanish on March 13 at 5:30 p.m. in the Life Foundation building at 1000 South Main Street, Room 302 in Salinas.  This is a great place to meet with others who are going through the same experience that you are and get information from a great non-profit group.  Regular readers of my blog know that both my grandmother and my father had this terrible disease when they passed away, and I have been working diligently with the Monterey Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association to raise money to find a cure.  In addition to being the largest private funder of Alzheimer's research in the United States, they have support groups and a 24-hour hotline (800-272-3900) where a dedicated staff can help you if you are struggling with caring for a loved one with the disease.
